beginnings

My youth in motO

I started my first races at the age of 14, then thanks to Petrella Giancarlo, a mechanic but also almost a father, I started to win the first races of the Italian Junior 125 class Championship, first with the KTM and then with Aprilia.

THE Regolarità

in moto since 1972

Since I started racing in 1972, I've always won all the races I've competed in. In 1980 I joined the F.F.O.O. sports group of the state police and in the same year I was hired by KTM Farioli.

My first Dakar

Paris Dakar 1984

After having raced in 1983 with Yamaha Belgarda all the European Enduro Championship class 4t with a TT600, I decided, even if for me Africa was an unknown territory, to participate in the first Paris-Dakar. I was the first of the Italians and sixth overall until the last day, then because of the front wheel I took a lump sum penalty that I placed only 20 °.

I'm going back to Africa

the 1985 dakar

After the brilliant debut in the first Dakar, Yamaha Belgarda asks me to repeat the experience, thanks also to my strong attitude for this type of races, confirmed by the excellent placings (always in the first 10 and 5th overall before my retirement due to mechanical failure).

African satisfactions

the 1986 Dakar

Again in Africa, again with Yamaha Belgarda, always protagonist in the first places, also with stage victory. The experience is beginning to be a good gift of mine, in fact "good navigator", always in the first places in the final result and 6th overall.

le petit

THE 1987 DAKAR

In 1987 I was hired by the prestigious BMW Marlboro Team, the first Italian to compete with a foreign team. The results confirm my skills, 4 absolute, until the retirement due to the breakage of the cardan. At that precise moment I was first above all with an hour's advantage, having found the right path compared to all the others.

Suzuki dr big

THE 1988 DAKAR

In August 1987, I was summoned to France to Château Latour to test what would be the official motorbike of the 88th Dakar, the legendary Suzuki DR Big 800cc, built specifically for African races. Thanks also to my technical suggestions the bike is competitive especially in cycling and suspension, but suffers from the lack of power compared to the twin-cylinder.

last time in africa

THE 1989 DAKAR

Once again the only Italian hired by an official French team, Yamaha Sonauto, the forerunners of the Dakar since 1982. Team mate of the one who will become the number 1 for many years of this prestigious race, Stephane Peterhansel, I placed 5th overall until my fateful accident. Always as a protagonist, good navigator and also good technician who sees me able to remedy emergency situations. In Niger, on the 11th day of the Dakar, I fall ruinously into an Oued, a dry stream in Maghreb jargon, where a rock hidden by the sand has violently disengaged me from the bike losing consciousness, from there my Dakar ends with a transfer by plane to Italy.

the faraons

the pharaohs' rally, the Hungary rally and others

After the accident in Niger, with a long reflection, I decide not to close my experience in Africa like this. Suzuki Italia supplies me with some official parts of the DR Big 800cc, together with my historical mechanic of my youth, "Petrella detto il Buschino", I assemble the bike with which I will participate in my last Pharaoh's Rally from a private garage. I leave for Cairo with Alberto Palma, also from Perugia and great friend and official mechanic since now 3 Dakar, competing the race totally to the adventure finishing 8th overall. With great joy and satisfaction now I can say goodbye to my beloved Africa.

still in motorbike

vintage races

After long years out of racing as a professional, in 2014 I enrolled in the Italian Championship Gr5 Moto d'Epoca with my Puch 175cc, concluding the debut, after 23 years out of racing, 2nd overall and 1st in class.
In 2015 I took part in the re-enactment of the legendary Six Days of Elba, won in 1981 with the Vase. I won the Umbria Team Trophy, 2nd overall behind my young friend and pupil Paolo Giulietti, 1st in class 175 and 1st in the Industry Trophy with the Puch.
Among the most vivid recent memories, I participate in the race "Honor to Captain Augusto Taiocchi" in 2017 organized by my friend Claudio Terruzzi, placing 1st class and 4th overall.
In 2018 the event is called "Trophy of Nations" where I still enjoy not yet as a spectator, but as a protagonist.
